Brand Tracking Wave
The repeatable tracker: unaided recall, consideration funnel, and image shifts.
13 questions · 4 pages · about 5 minutes to answer · fully editable after you start
Brand trackers earn their cost through discipline: identical questions, regular waves, and the funnel read – awareness to familiarity to consideration to preference. This wave instrument fixes that core with an unaided-first structure that keeps recall honest before prompting: first-mentioned brand, then every other brand the respondent can name, and only then the brand list, the funnel grid, purchase in the last six months and the brand bought most often.
Anyone who has not bought or used the category in the last 12 months is screened out after the first question, so the funnel is read among category users only. The unaided-first ordering is not a stylistic choice and must not be edited. Showing a brand list before asking for spontaneous recall contaminates the most valuable number in the tracker, and once a wave has been run in the wrong order it cannot be compared with any wave run in the right one. After the funnel come advertising recall for your brand, a pick-any image grid that shows which brands own which attributes, and your brand's Net Promoter Score; age, gender and area close it so each wave can be weighted to the same profile.
Run quarterly with fresh samples; the wave-over-wave funnel deltas are the marketing scoreboard executives actually read. Resist the temptation to improve the wording between waves – a tracker's value is entirely in its comparability, and a question rewritten for clarity in wave six quietly destroys the trend line that justified the spend for the previous five. Replace [category] and [Brand A] to [Brand D] with your own category and brands before the first wave, and keep them word for word after that.
